Overview

A Safety Plan is a document that identifies the hazards associated with a particular building, activity, programme, event, or work project and sets out the controls we will use to manage those risks. It is essentially our written plan for keeping people safe.

We require a Safety Plan for each building and ministry activity because the hazards and risks are different in every situation. A church building may have risks such as slips, trips, fire, asbestos, or working at height, while a youth camp may involve transport, outdoor activities, food preparation, weather conditions, and supervision of young people. A single plan cannot adequately address all these different risks.

Safety Plans help us to:

  • identify hazards before someone is harmed

  • assess and manage the risks associated with those hazards

  • document the controls that are in place to keep people safe

  • communicate safety expectations to team members, volunteers, contractors, and participants

  • demonstrate that we have taken reasonably practicable steps to meet our health and safety obligations

  • provide a consistent process for reviewing and improving safety practices

  • respond effectively to incidents, emergencies, and changing circumstances

Within our Health and Safety Management Plan, Safety Plans also function as our Hazard and Risk Registers, ensuring that hazards, controls, monitoring requirements, and review dates are documented and maintained.

Safety Plans are managed in Risk Manager and should be reviewed by vestry annually.
