Pray to

Pentecost

Thursday 29 May - Sunday 8 June 2025

2025 marks the 10th year of Thy Kingdom Come - a global ecumenical prayer movement that invites Christians around the world to pray from Ascension to Pentecost for more people to come to know Jesus.

This year as we pray to Pentecost we have three simple but meaningful ways to engage:

  1. Prayer walking every street in our diocese

  2. Pray for five people to come to know the light and love of Jesus

  3. Run a prayer vigil

Prayer walking

What would happen if every home, every street, and every neighbourhood in our cities and towns were covered in prayer?

This Easter to Pentecost, we invite parishes and mission units to join in a season of intentional intercession, to invite God’s transformation of our communities. Through prayer-walking and the Holy Ground app, we seek kingdom renewal—where pain turns to joy and brokenness is met with God’s restoration.

Like Nehemiah, we are moved by compassion to bring our parish geographies before God. In prayer, we lament, we confess, we petition and we bless. In all this we express our hope for what God desires to do, and confidence in what God can do.
— Bishop Anashuya Fletcher

At a family camp, Bishop Anna challenged the diocese to pray for every house, street, and suburb in preparation for Pentecost. The initiative involves using an app called Holy Here to mark streets with a red line. Participants are encouraged to pray with open eyes, addressing spiritual darkness and blessing households, schools, parks, and businesses. The goal is to pray for every person in the diocese to experience Jesus, recognizing a current move of the Spirit. Tips include praying for the fruitfulness of rural lands and the well-being of city workers.

RESOURCES

The Holy Here app

HOLY here is a prayer walking app that was previously HOLYground.

Inspired by the vision of Thy Kingdom Come, the global prayer movement, this initiative seeks to spiritually re-map our cities—transforming streets, homes, businesses, and public spaces into places of divine encounter. From Easter Sunday to Pentecost, we are dedicating this time to walk our streets in prayer.

Stepping out together, we ask for God’s goodness to fill our neighbourhoods, for healing to touch the hurting, and for Jesus’ love to be made manifest in the places we live, work, and worship.

Bishop Ana says, “There is something profoundly sacred about walking our streets in prayer. As we move through our neighbourhoods, we are reminded that God is already present, inviting us to partner with the Spirit in bringing renewal.

“Like Nehemiah we are moved by compassion to bring our parish geographies before God. In prayer, we lament, we confess, we petition and we bless. In all this we express our hope for what God desires to do, and confidence in what God can do."

Prayer prompt cards

We know it can be hard sometimes to find things to pray for when you’re out walking, so we have created some prayer prompt cards that you might find helpful. You might want to print these, cut them out, and place them in a bowl to choose from at random.

Pray for Five

Step 1: Identify your 5

Before we begin our 10 days of prayer, you can start asking God now who are the 5 people you are going to pray for. You are of course welcome to pray for more than 5! They might be people who don’t yet know Jesus, or perhaps people who are struggling in their faith.

Spend time listening to God.

To help you identify your people, you might like to ask yourself:

  • Who are the people who are friendly and curious about how I live my faith?

  • Who are the people who just keep popping into my head?

  • Have I had any surprise encounters with people recently?

  • Who in my family could I pray for?

Step 2: Identify who to do this prayer journey with

You might do this prayer journey alone, and that’s OK, but there’s something about praying with and alongside others. Consider gathering with others to do this time of prayer with. This might be your family, household, some friends, or maybe your small group. There are activities to do if you have smaller people in your life - we can all pray for 5.

You don’t need to share your names with others if that’s not appropriate. But as we pray alongside each other we are encouraged, and can celebrate when we see the power of God at work.

Step 3: Pray!

You might like to use the Thy Kingdom Come prayer journal to help guide you with this - each day explores different aspects of the Lord’s Prayer, and has reflections from a variety of different denominations and traditions.

Run a prayer VIGIL

Prayer rooms are a fantastic way to engage your church in prayer. People sign up for a one-hour slot and come to a prayer room that is conducive to prayer and seeking God. We gather not around some personality or event, but we go to a place of prayer to seek Jesus for our communities and our nation.

There are three ways you can engage with this initiative:

1: Pray for 24 hours

Your church can pray for 24 hours, setting up a prayer room and joining in this initiative by participating at any point during the ten days.

2: Pray for the full 10 days

Your church may be large enough or passionate enough to cover the ten days of continuous prayer!

3: Partner with other churches

Why don’t you partner with churches near you - maybe churches in your cluster, or with other churches from different denominations. This may look like one centralised prayer room in a town or city or multiple prayer rooms across these ten days. Not only are we praying, but we are gathering in unity together to seek God.

24/7 Prayer New Zealand has some fabulous resources available to help you with this, including an online sign-up system to help you manage your prayer room. Check out these resources:
