Synod Charge: Bishop Anashuya Fletcher

In her first Synod charge, Assistant Bishop Anashuya Fletcher shared a story that captured the beauty of ministry in the everyday. Recounting a trip to Taihape where Google Maps led her through an unexpected scenic route, she talked about how the unexpected journey helped her appreciate the unique beauty of the diocese—the landscapes, communities, and people we’re called to care for.

Bishop Ana spoke passionately about the importance of small, personal connections, quoting former Archbishop of Canterbury Michael Ramsey: “The glory of Christianity is its claim that small things really matter.” As an example of this, she used the example of Rev Tracey Peters from Taihape, who knows each person in her community by name. This kind of intimate, dedicated ministry exemplifies what it means to love people deeply and make a real impact.

With a reminder that true transformation often starts in small ways, Ana encouraged everyone at Synod to think about the people and places they carry in their hearts. As we look to love our communities, we need to remember that ministry isn’t just about big moments - it’s in the quiet, everyday connections. She invited those present to join in prayer, supporting the communities they serve and holding close the vision of building faith communities that reflect God’s love and transformation.
