Te Pouhere Sunday/12th Sunday in Ordinary Time/Te Rātapu Tekau mā rua o He Wā Noa

Prayers taken from/inspired by 1 Kings 19:1-4, 8-15a; Psalm 42 and 43; Galatians 3:23-29; Luke 8:26-39, and the ANZPB

Bidding: Put your hope in God.
Response: … I will yet praise him,
    my Savior and my God.

[Psalm 42:5b]

Let us pray.

As the deer pants for streams of water,
    so my soul pants for you, my God.
My soul thirsts for God, for the living God.
    When can I go and meet with God?
 My tears have been my food
    day and night,
while people say to me all day long,
    “Where is your God?”

[Psalm 42: 1-3]

Lord Jesus, our communities cry out for your mercy and grace.
May we walk together, knowing that we are one in you;
teach us to see our neighbours as you see them.

[Silence]

Bidding: Put your hope in God.
Response: … I will yet praise him,
    my Savior and my God.

These things I remember
    as I pour out my soul:
how I used to go to the house of God
    under the protection of the Mighty One
with shouts of joy and praise
    among the festive throng.

[Psalm 42:4]

Mighty One, lead your church.
Draw us into the house of God;
inspire us in worship and service.

[Silence]

Bidding: Put your hope in God.
Response: … I will yet praise him,
    my Savior and my God.

I say to God my Rock,
    “Why have you forgotten me?
Why must I go about mourning,
    oppressed by the enemy?”
“My bones suffer mortal agony
    as my foes taunt me,
saying to me all day long,
    “Where is your God?”
[Psalm 42:9-10]

Merciful Saviour, you hear the cries of your people,
the mortal agony of the suffering.
Reveal yourself to your creation;
show us where you are.

[Silence]

Bidding: Put your hope in God.
Response: … I will yet praise him,
    my Savior and my God.

In hope, we proclaim:

…in Christ Jesus you are all children of God through faith, for all of you who were baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ. There is neither Jew nor Gentile, neither slave nor free, nor is there male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus. If you belong to Christ, then you are Abraham’s seed, and heirs according to the promise.
[Galatians 3:26-29]

Almighty God, you have made us for yourself, and our hearts are restless till they find their rest in you; so lead us by your Spirit that in this life we may live to your glory and in the life to come enjoy you forever; through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Amen.
