Vetting Requirements

The Diocese requires all people in a ministry role to be vetted at least once every 3 years by New Zealand Police. A “ministry role” includes:

  • All Priests and Deacons with a licence or Permission to Officiate, regardless of whether they are paid, self-supporting or otherwise.

  • Lay church leaders (service leaders, wardens-in-charge etc).

  • Vestry members, treasurers, synod representatives and wardens.

  • Ministry teams who undertake pastoral care, children and youth programmes, or otherwise work with vulnerable people in the community.

  • All staff on the Missions Unit payroll.

  • Anyone else with responsibility for an aspect of church life which means that they might interact with children, youth or vulnerable people.

If the applicant is under 18 and responsible for the care of others, we ask they complete a police check.

If they are under 18 in a ministry role, but are not directly responsible for the care of others, we do not require them to be vetted, however we will do so on request.

If you are unsure whether a person should be vetted, please get in touch with us.

There are two types of vetting:

  • Police Vetting

  • Ministry of Justice Criminal Record Check

The type of vetting depends on the nature of the role. If your role is public-facing and involves vulnerable people, including children and young people, please submit a police vetting form and label it as one of the following:

  • Community Support Role

  • Children and/or Young Persons Ministry Team

  • Parish Pastoral Care

For all other roles, including vestry members, treasurer, and administration, please complete a Ministry of Justice Criminal Record Check.

For any questions or for more information about police vetting, please email reception@anglicanmovement.nz or call 04 472 1057.

Recruiting Clergy

As a Mission Unit, you may have recently experienced an interregnum – a period when the previous clergy concluded their ministry, and relief clergy provided support.

Following a time of discernment about God’s purpose and mission for the unit, and after consulting with the Bishop, the moment has arrived to begin the recruitment of new clergy.

Recruitment of clergy is managed through the Bishop’s office – email bishopsoffice@anglicanmovement.nz.
