About the Diocese of Christchurch

The Anglican Diocese of Christchurch is a regional organisation within the Anglican Church in Aotearoa, New Zealand and Polynesia. The Diocese exists to serve the people in 55 ministry units in Canterbury, Westland and the Chatham Islands by working towards the global Anglican Communion’s five marks of mission:

  • To transform unjust structures of society, to challenge violence of every kind, and pursue peace and reconciliation.

Through the 2020s the Diocese is engaged in comprehensive work towards Regeneration – seeking renewal of the Diocese through building new generations of

worshippers and disciples in our ministry units, and reshaping the Diocese so it is fit for purpose for its Christ-centred mission in the 21st century.

About the Position

We are seeking a Diocesan Manager to oversee the provision of efficient administrative functions of the

  • Diocesan Office,

  • Anglican Diocesan Ministry Support Centre (ADMSC) staff,

  • Anglican Centre and other Diocesan bodies based there.

The role is based at the Anglican Centre, 95 Tuam Street, Christchurch.

The role implements and keeps updated the policies of Synod and Standing Committee of the Diocese, and acts under the delegated authority of the Synod and

Standing Committee and the ADMSC board. As a key member of the Diocesan Office, the Diocesan Manager will make a vital contribution to the Diocesan Office and the Ministry Units within the Diocese, by

  • Ensuring the efficient running of the Diocesan Office and the ministry units in the Diocese.

  • Being the official interface with the Governing Body of the Diocese, Synod, which meets at least annually, being the interface with Standing Committee, (Synod outside Synod), which meets monthly and with the ADMSC board which meets bimonthly.

  • Ensuring that all policies and guidelines are updated regularly, and comply with relevant laws, regulations, and ethical standards.

  • Developing the annual budget in conjunction with the Finance Manager.

  • Ensuring best practice in maintaining the Diocesan ministry unit archives.

  • Hold the role of Privacy Officer and ensuring that the Diocesan Ministry units comply with the Privacy Act.

  • Taking responsibility for the management of the Anglican Centre building, ensuring all relevant legislation is adhered to.

  • Taking responsibility for Health and Safety policies, procedures, and reporting

  • Establishing and maintaining strong relationships with key stakeholders.

  • Collaborating with the Church Property Trustees whose staff also work in the Anglican Centre

This is a permanent, full-time position.

Ideal Appointee

We are seeking an experienced manager with the following skills and expertise:

  • A strong alignment with the Mission, Vision and Values of the Anglican Diocese of Christchurch, and an affinity with Anglican ethos, doctrine, worship and spiritual tradition, including the ethos of “Gospel and Treaty” of the. Anglican Church in Aotearoa, New Zealand and Polynesia.

  • A proven senior executive management ability to provide inspirational leadership and a clear sense of direction, preferably within the Not for Profit sector.

  • A proven senior executive management ability to be accountable (in this case to the Bishop of Christchurch and to the Standing Committee of the Diocese of Christchurch).

  • A proven ability to work collaboratively with a wide range of people (in this case both within the Anglican Centre and with people in our ministry units).

  • Excellent interpersonal skills and a high level of written and oral communication including ability to provide quality Board reporting.

  • Proven stakeholder relationship management and networking skills

  • Experience managing significant budgets with strong financial management, analytical and reporting skills.

  • Experience in leading change and embedding new and innovative practices into an organisation.

  • Have a strong working knowledge of New Zealand law in relation to Health and Safety, Employment, Privacy and Human Rights

  • Be culturally sensitive and aware of the role of the Treaty of Waitangi in society and the church.

  • Strong digital competence including the use of the MS Office suite.

  • Be self-motivated and be totally committed to the role.
