Meri Hōhepa Suzanne Aubert – A Heroic Life of Service and Compassion

Venerable Meri Hōhepa Suzanne Aubert (1835–1926) is an extraordinary person in New Zealand’s history, recognised for her remarkable strength and determination in the face of adversity. She arrived in New Zealand from France in 1860 as a young pioneering Catholic woman to work as a missionary among Māori. Dedicating her life to this country over nearly seven decades, she overcame many challenges to found the Sisters of Our Lady of Compassion, to establish hospitals, orphanages and social services, especially among Māori. She earned the title ‘Mother of the Poor’ and left a lasting legacy of compassion and care. When she died, 1 October 1926, her funeral was one of the biggest ever given for a woman in New Zealand, a tribute to her unwavering and unrelenting dedication to the thousands of people she and her Sisters had cared for. Her most visible legacy is Wellington's Compassion Soup Kitchen, which she founded in 1901, and the Home of Compassion in Island Bay. This outstanding woman became an inspiration to New Zealanders then and now.
