Rev. Hamish Dobbie

I discerned for ordination in 2020 during the height of the pandemic, and got ordained as a deacon in 2022, after finishing two years of study at St John’s theological College. For the last two years I have been doing my curacy out at St David’s in Naenae, under Martin and Alison Robinson, and I’ve loved getting to know the community.

Much of my calling to ministry is bound up with the exploration of my Māori identity, as well as a deep commitment to the bi-cultural journey, both of which have been a strong call from God on my life. I believe that being a bridge between the Māori and Pākehā worlds has, and will be, a big part of my ministry, furthering the reconciliation between Māori and tauiwi in Church. Being at home in this land, for me, also means exploring how the Māori worldview could enrich our faith and bring new life to our Church.

One of the things I really appreciate about the Anglican Church in Aotearoa is its long history with Māori in this land. In some way I hope to live out of that whakaapa in my ministry. I also hope that, with the privilege, blessing, and calling upon my life, that I can use those things to uphold the mana of the most vulnerable people in our communities, many of whom are my Māori brothers and sisters.

To all the people who have contributed to getting me to this point in my life and ministry; mai i tēnei ngākau whakaiti, tēnā rawa atu koutou, mō koutou i tuku mai ki ahau te mana ki te tū pēnei. Ka tū ahau ki runga i ō kōutou pakahiwi.

Korōria ki te Atua.

The Ordination Service or Rev. Hamish Dobbie is 2 pm Saturday 16 November at St David’s Naenae.
