Leave

Clergy Leave
The clergy leave provision is 4 weeks per year for rest and recreation.

As per section 41 of the Canons:

(3) In the case of ordained staff, the leave provision is part of the Covenant Agreement between the Bishop, the clergyperson and the Mission Unit, as set out in sections 16 and 17 of the Diocesan Clergy Canon 1993.

(4) The leave to which subsection (3) applies— (a) must not be less than 4 weeks, including 4 Sundays, for clergy whose role is full-time, or the FTE thereof for clergy whose role is part-time; and (b) is to be taken during the year to which it applies and may not accrue as it is a pastoral provision to enable rest and recreation.

This leave differs from annual leave under the Employment Relations Act as it does not accrue and has no financial value.  The primary purpose of this leave provision is to ensure from a health and safety perspective that clergy can take 4 weeks away from their roles to ensure rest and recreation every year.

How to approve leave – clergy/wardens
We use MYOB Advanced Payroll to help you manage leave. A MYOB user will need to approve the leave in the system and here is how the process works:

  1. Discuss leave and approve leave with your wardens.

  2. Enter the leave request in MYOB Advanced.

  3. Forward an email with the leave approval to payroll@anglicanmovement.nz

  4. The payroll team will approve it in the system.

Sick & Bereavement Leave
There is no annual quota for sick leave or an allocation for bereavement leave for clergy.  Leave is taken as it is required.  Where this is an extended period, please email the Diocesan Manager, ben@anglicanmovement.nz to ensure any eligibility for long-term support through Anglican Financial Care has been captured.

Parental Leave
For any queries relating to parental leave please email payroll@anglicanmovement.nz

Sabbatical Leave

What is sabbatical leave?
As per Section B1 of the Diocesan Standing Resolutions, in the 7th year of a clergyperson’s ministry, clergy are entitled to a leave period of up to 3 months of sabbatical leave.  During this time, their parish continues to cover all costs related to the eligible clergy’s payroll with the exception of their hospitality and travel allowance as per section 5 (ii) in the attached.

Sabbatical leave is taken for the purposes of rest, renewal and discernment and may include study and professional development. It is an essential component of self-care and of the care of the diocese for those who minister in its name.

All clergy and lay ministers in charge are eligible to take sabbatical leave. This occurs whether the clergyperson is stipendiary or self-supporting, whether full or part time. It is an important way, following the scriptural pattern, that our diocese provides for the pastoral and ministry needs of our clergy and lay ministers in charge.

Who funds the sabbatical leave?
A stipendiary clergyperson on Sabbatical Leave continues to be provided by their mission unit with their current stipend, pension subsidy, payroll insurance, and all allowances except those listed in subclause (ii); and (ii) is not entitled to be provided with their hospitality or travel allowance.

I need to apply for Sabbatical Leave. What is the process?
To initiate the application process, complete the form below or email Paul Carey in the Bishops Office at paul@anglicanmovement.nz.

What is the sabbatical fund, and how can I draw down money?
The main purpose of the Fund is to make payments to a Mission Unit when a stipended clergy person is taking sabbatical leave, covering payment of expenses best suited to enable ministry in the Mission Unit in lieu of the ministry of the person on sabbatical leave.

For more detailed information, please refer to section B1 (6) Standing Resolution.
