Prayers 31 August 2025
22nd Sunday in Ordinary Time/Te Rātapu Rua Tekau mā rua o He Wā Noa
Prayers taken from/inspired by Jeremiah 2:4-13; Psalm 81:1,10-16; Hebrews 13:1-8,15-16; Luke 14:1,7-14, and the ANZPB.
Bidding: Lord, hear us;
Response: Lord, hear our prayer.
[from Psalm 80:3]
Let us pray.
Jesus said to his host, “When you give a luncheon or dinner, do not invite your friends, your brothers or sisters, your relatives, or your rich neighbours; if you do, they may invite you back and so you will be repaid. But when you give a banquet, invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, the blind, and you will be blessed. Although they cannot repay you, you will be repaid at the resurrection of the righteous.”
[Luke 14:12-14]
Merciful God, mould our communities
into images of your kingdom.
[silence]
Bidding: Lord, hear us;
Response: Lord, hear our prayer.
“My people have committed two sins:
They have forsaken me,
the spring of living water,
and have dug their own cisterns,
broken cisterns that cannot hold water.”
[Jeremiah 2:13]
Heavenly Father, lead your church.
Draw us into your life.
[silence]
Bidding: Lord, hear us;
Response: Lord, hear our prayer.
Keep on loving one another as brothers and sisters. Do not forget to show hospitality to strangers, for by so doing some people have shown hospitality to angels without knowing it. Continue to remember those in prison as if you were together with them in prison, and those who are mistreated as if you yourselves were suffering.
[Hebrews 13:1-3]
We pray for creation.
May Your love be known throughout the world.
[silence]
Bidding: Lord, hear us;
Response: Lord, hear our prayer.
…God has said,
“Never will I leave you;
never will I forsake you.”
So we say with confidence,
“The Lord is my helper; I will not be afraid.
What can mere mortals do to me?”
[Hebrews 13:5b-6]
Lord, help us to see: to see what is eternally good and true, and having seen, to go on searching until we come to the joys of heaven; for the glory of your holy name.
Amen.
