Pies, People, and Community at Onslow Anglicans

Onslow Anglicans recently hosted its third annual Pie Competition, a much-loved event that brings neighbours, friends, and parishioners together for good food and good company. This year, 14 homemade pies, both sweet and savoury, were baked and shared by those who came along.

Guest judge Phil McCarthy, who leads the Diocese’s refugee resettlement initiatives, had the challenging job of tasting every entry and choosing the winners.

Children joined in the fun too.

“I thought it would be fun to cook something. I just wanted to participate. Everyone got to eat different pies. All the pies were good-looking. They each had a good chance of winning.” Joshua (age 8)

“So many people ate Joshua's apple pie, it was good, so many people ate it.” Ezra (age 6)

“I liked how creative people were with what they chose to do.” Naomi (age 11)

Community Connector Karen Moreau reflected, “We were not just eating food for sustenance. As part of our core values, this is a chance to be WITH each other, an invitation to go deeper into relationships and learn more about each other, just like Jesus gathered with his disciples. This is where true hospitality has grown: God’s heart at the centre.”

Awards were given for the following categories:

·         Tastiest Sweet Pie,

·         Tastiest Savoury Pie,

·         Best Kid’s Pie (12 years and under), and,

·         People’s Choice Award

Each winner received a certificate and a voucher to the local Bread & Butter Eatery to recognise their delicious efforts and community spirit.
