Onslow Anglicans put on the Pies!

Onslow Anglicans hosted their inaugural Onslow Anglicans Pie Competition on Sunday and found the tasty initiative was a great way to involve their wider community.

Friends from their church community and new visitors from the neighbourhood contributed 15 amazing home-cooked pies of all different flavours, including four pies creatively made by talented teens.

“We just thought we would do a fun event open to everybody,” says Co-Vicar Rev Bek Hickman.

The idea for the pie competition originated from young people in the congregation, and was a great way for them to have a go at putting their idea into action in their church context. Perhaps not surprisingly, the pie competition had a particular appeal with youth in the wider community, including students from Wellington Ballet who were already familiar with the church from their ballet school’s use of the hall, but had never attended a service.

Russell Coventry (CFO at Rutherford & Meyer who export quality NZ Foods) was the celebrity guest judge who tasted samples of every pie and rated each one based on presentation, taste, texture, and ‘wow-factor’. They were all of a phenomenal quality.

The ultimate winners were: “Best Savoury” went to Rosh & Anuj who used their Sri Lankan curry skills to make their first ever pie, and “Best Sweet” went to Grace (13) for her banoffee pie.

The only ‘bad taste’ was the pie-puns and ‘pied piper’ jokes by Rev Andy Hickman the MC. Registrations are open for next year’s event and non-bakers are encouraged to give it a try.
