Living Wage Schools is Launched!

The living wage movement is reaching into school communities, calling for all school cleaners, caretakers, canteen staff, and groundskeepers to be paid a living wage.

Schools are hubs in our communities, and these staff are central to schools being safe, welcoming and nurturing environments that aid learning and bring cohesion to our neighbourhoods. Unlike other non-teaching staff, these positions are still often minimum wage. Many school cleaners, caretakers, canteen staff, and groundskeepers have children attending school – decent pay impact whole families, and ultimately children’s education.

The Movement is calling on school boards to sign a pledge of support, asking government to ensure staff employed directly and through contractors are dignified with adequate pay. This will not further stretch individual school’s resources but will make sure all staff members’ contributions are acknowledged, starting with adequate wages.

The Anglican Movement has been a long supporter of the living wage movement. Our many local faith communities span a huge reach of neighbourhoods in our region – so we could have real impact in living wage schools becoming reality.
