Anti-Idol: Anglican’s got talent!
Something pretty different is happening down at St Mary’s Silverstream this month.
On Saturday 21 June, St Mary’s Silverstream has invited anyone and everyone across the local parishes (or the wider Dio for that matter) to come and bring their talents to the altar…or stage!
“In our hearts, we want to create a shared experience where people bring the skills, passions and interests they have - the deep things of life they enjoy that God has put in them - and share them with one another. We’ve done this quite a bit in other contexts and really feel that now anchors this event out of our local parish,” Karla Billington, St Mary’s Youth Leader, explains.
Rev Kath Bier adds, “We want to celebrate the creativity that God has given us, and part of the fun is that people are often shocked at the talent that’s been sitting or living right next to them all these years and no one ever knew. Jesus said he came to give us life to the full, so we want to share that with the neighbourhood! This time around, we’ve got some musical acts, some poetry, some photography, some live joke-telling, and a handful of impromptu audience items.”
"We’re having a bit of fun with the name too: Anti-idol is a play on words…it’s a talent night but unlike the television shows this is about giving thanks for the richness of life’s gifts that God has given us in art, poetry, music, humour. Instead of looking for the next star to idolise or competing with each other, we’re just celebrating! So come and join us for an evening of fun, and have a go, no matter how confident or experienced you are. Let’s take a moment and celebrate the joy of life together,” says Karla.
Anti-idol kicks off at 6.30 pm, Saturday 21 June and will wrap up around 9 pm.
All welcome! There’s no charge, but a plate to share for supper would be most welcome!
