Anglican Studies launches lockdown “taster” course
A new five-week course has been developed by our Anglican Studies programme, in conjunction with St John’s College, giving us a chance to gain a taste of what the programme has to offer during lockdown.
The new course explores what it means to be virtual church in a lockdown, and is a great introduction to theological study, says Rev. Dr Joe McGarry, our Anglican Studies co-ordinator. The course is developed for Level 5 study and offers five credits, but assumes that students enrolling in the course have no prior knowledge or theological study experience.
The course is open to everyone - whether you want to study for credit or just for fun, you’re welcome to enrol. There will be about two to three hours of reading per week, and an essay at the end. These are requirements for those studying for credit, but if you just want to learn and be part of the discipleship community, then you only need to attend the lectures - the reading and essay are optional.
Part of the reading will come from the book Canoeing the Mountains, which talks about Christian leadership in uncharted territory. This material will be taught by Bishop Justin, and those of us currently reading this book in Leadership Huddles would agree that it is completely apt for the season in which we find ourselves!
Here’s what the course will involve:
Twice-weekly lectures, for one hour each, delivered via Zoom. These will most likely be during the day, but the timing of which can be worked out to best suit the students.
Reading: 2-3 hours per week, including material from Canoeing the Mountains. This will be a requirement for those studying for credit, and will be optional for those studying for interest.
Essay: in the final few weeks, students studying for credit will be required to complete an assignment. Details will be provided once the course begins. For those studying for fun or interest, this will be optional.
