Volunteers needed for refugee resettlement in Wellington

We invite parishes in the Wellington Diocese to join our partnership with the Red Cross to resettle former refugees.

Jacob Smythe, the Volunteer Programme Lead for the Red Cross, said a committed number of parishes were doing a wonderful job, however, with more families arriving, the need for more parishes is essential.

Recently, a late notice request was made to settle two families of seven and one of eight in May.

Jacob says, “Watching the Anglican parishes in Wellington mobilise resource and volunteers for the resettlement programme is incredible.

“Despite the uncertainty in knowing when arrivals will come, there’s always good grace and cheerfulness.”

However, Jacob said the involvement of more parishes would spread the load amongst a larger number of people, particularly when the need is urgent.

There is a need for quality small appliances, towels, and bedding (duvets, sheets, blankets, protectors). In addition, donations are much appreciated, and can be deposited into the Diocese account with a reference, or through our website: www.anglicanmovement.nz/donate

Synod 2022 agreed to make refugee support a priority in 2023.

Anyone wanting to be involved on an ongoing basis can volunteer through their parish. Volunteers gather donations or fundraise to pull together a collection of household items, which can either be new or second hand. Another parish, then sets up these items in the house that they family will be moving to. Another option for people wanting to be involved with the settlement process is to volunteer directly with the Red Cross. Full training is provided, after which the volunteer is placed with a family for six months to help in a ‘social bridging role’. This can include accompanying someone on trips to Work and Income, the local school, recreation activities, and providing assistance with online banking.
