Vacancy Assistant Priest (x2)
Te Whare Karakia Nui O Paora Tapu Ki Te Whanganui-A-Tara
Wellington Cathedral of St Paul is seeking to appoint a full-timeAssociate Priest and a part-time Assistant Priest (0.5 FTE, fixed-term for two years).
Both roles will join the Cathedral’s ministry team, led by the Dean, Katie Lawrence, supporting and strengthening the growing ministry and mission of our faith community.
A house of prayer and worship for the nation, the Cathedral is centrally located in the heart of Wellington and offers a place of prayerful encounter and community for all the people of Aotearoa New Zealand. We stand as a sign of faith, pointing to the reality of God’s presence in the world and in our lives, and proclaim the word and work of Christ through our welcome, worship, and witness.
Associate Priest – Full Time
This full-time role is well-suited to a committed follower of Jesus with the capacity to serve within our Three-Tikanga Anglican Church and to minister to those not yet connected to a faith community.
In addition to participating in the day-to-day ministerial responsibilities in our busy setting, you will lead our mission to form disciples who, in turn, disciple others. This includes developing and delivering Christian education across the Cathedral parish, supporting Home Groups, helping renew young adult ministry, and working alongside the Dean to grow an intergenerational and mixed-ecology approach to our culture, education, discipleship and worship.
We are particularly interested in candidates who are fluent in Te Reo Māori and can help strengthen our bicultural engagement in this area.
You will work closely with the Dean and deputise for her when required.
Assistant Priest – 0.5 FTE (Fixed Term, 2 Years)
This half-time, fixed-term role is designed to support the growth of the Cathedral’s rhythm of prayer and worship, enhance pastoral care, and contribute to Occasional Offices (baptisms, weddings, and funerals).
The role also focuses on engaging with visitors and those exploring faith during the week. It would suit someone seeking to develop their ministry within a supportive environment and who values flexible working arrangements.
Eligibility
While preference will be given to priests ordained within the Anglican Communion, we also welcome applications from those who have served in paid ministry roles as a pastor or minister in another Christian denomination for at least six years and who hold a recognised theological degree.
Person Specification (applies to both roles)
For both full-time and part-time roles, applicants must hold New Zealand citizenship or permanent residency.
We are seeking individuals who are:
Christ-centred
Able to minister across cultures
Committed to the authority of Holy Scripture and affirming of the Apostles’ and Nicene Creeds as sufficient statements of the Christian faith
Passionate about the central role of prayer, worship, and sacramental ministry within the Anglican tradition
Confident and capable in planning and leading liturgy across a wide range of services
Skilled in communicating the gospel faithfully and sensitively in large, public settings
Theologically informed and pastorally experienced
Collaborative, experienced, and confident working within a dynamic ministerial context
Committed to living out the Anglican Five Marks of Mission that shape the Cathedral’s culture
Able to deliver clearly defined projects within agreed timeframes
Experienced in developing, nurturing, and growing new ministries alongside lay volunteers
Technically proficient with good administrative skills and able to work independently when required
If you bring a strong sense of calling, relevant skills, and alignment with our mission, we encourage you to apply, even if you do not meet every criterion in full. Together, these two roles are intended to complement one another and strengthen the Cathedral’s ministry team.
