St Barnabas Church Thrives with Renewed Focus on Growth and Community!

St Barnabas Church, Roseneath, Wellington, is experiencing positive change and growth thanks to their participation in the LYCIG conference last November.  

Known for its vibrant Anglo-Catholic liturgy, it has embraced a renewed commitment to spiritual and numerical growth and fostering a welcoming atmosphere for new and existing members. 

"The LYCIG conference was a turning point for us," says Rev. Cath Growcott.  

"The tools and practical exercises really motivated us to focus on Jesus and the people in our community. It wasn't just about getting more people through the doors; it was about creating a space where everyone feels welcome, valued, and can grow in their faith." 

Prayer as the Foundation: 

The parish began by incorporating the LYCIG prayer for growth into their services and meetings. This focus on prayer, along with strong leadership and support from the Vestry, has instilled a "prayerful culture of growth" within the parish. 

Building a Strong Foundation: 

St Barnabas has prioritized getting the basics right.  They've emphasized creating a warm and welcoming community, with engaging worship services, including a special All-Age mass. Training for welcomers, readers, and other volunteers ensures a smooth and inclusive experience for everyone who walks through the doors. 

Communication is Key: 

The church has revamped its communication strategy, refreshing its website and reaching out directly to local residents and schools. They've also adopted simple yet effective methods like inviting neighbours to carol services and providing church business cards with key information. 

Celebrating Traditions and Welcoming Newcomers: 

Special services for ANZAC Day, Easter, and Christmas have been actively promoted, creating opportunities for the wider community to connect with the church. Additionally, St Barnabas has utilized resources like the "Pilgrim – Turn to Christ" books to support new Christians and those exploring faith. This dedication to inclusivity and hospitality has resulted in two adult baptisms at Easter and a marked increase in attendance. 

Looking Ahead: 

"We are filled with a new joy and energy," says Cath. "We see this as an ongoing journey, and we're committed to it. As we look towards our 125th anniversary, it's exciting to see how God is using St Barnabas to reach even more people in Wellington." 

There’s also been time to celebrate life’s gifts along the way.  

"There's something so special about witnessing baptisms and seeing new families join our church family. It reminds us that this work is truly making a difference." 

St Barnabas offers an Anglo-Catholic Sung Mass every Sunday at 10am.
