Register your team for the Low Carbon Challenge

We want to reduce the harmful impact we have on the environment and the Low Carbon Challenge one of the ways we can help make this happen. The challenge runs from Training Day on July 31st through to November, and during that time there will be tons of support to help you reach your goal.

There are many ways we can reduce our carbon footprint – from buying locally sourced produce to walking, instead of driving, to the shops. It doesn’t have to complicated and big – many small changes can make a big difference.

Here are some simple examples to get you thinking:

  • Cook one vegetarian meal per week.

  • Attend a community tree planting day.

  • Carpool to football each Saturday.

  • Pray for the climate each time we are stuck in traffic.

  • Read news about climate change once per week and pray for those affected.

We talked to a couple of people who have already entered teams to find out why they wanted to take part.

Cindy is entering Team Newport which consists of herself, her husband Andy and their 4 year old Audrey, under Lyall Bay Community Church. “We know there are big changes on the horizon in light of the Climate Commission’s recommendations to Government.” says Cindy. “We have slowly adopted changes to our lifestyle over the last few years and know there is so much more we can be doing. This challenge allows us to keep progressing in this space with a little more accountability and some fun competition alongside our wider Anglican whānau.” Team Newport each has a goal that is a personal target. Cindy hopes that she can learn more about how much carbon they can reduce as a family during this period and be inspired to keep going after 30th October.

Ben Pringle is entering his workplace – the Anglican Centre. “This is an issue that is close to my heart.” says Ben. “As a father of two young boys, I am deeply concerned about the planet they will inhabit and aware that the decisions we make (or fail to make) now will have a massive bearing on their futures.” Ben hopes to learn how our Diocese can collectively make a difference in reducing the impacts of climate change.

So what are you waiting for? Gather a team together and head along to Training Day to get inspired, set a goal (or goals!), get cracking and have fun doing it. If you can’t make it to the workshop at Training Day, a video will be available to get you and your team started. Your teams will get optional mentors and fun events to attend from August to November, but the only compulsory bit is attending the workshop OR watching the video.
