My Back is Securely Against the Church’s Walls
Becoming a vocational deacon is something I’ve cogitated on (to borrow a phrase from my father) for many years. And, to be completely honest, it’s something that I tried to avoid for a long while! But, I’ve come to realise that it’s not what I want but rather what God wants from me. So, here I am.
I have a passion for being involved in our community, and I see myself as a link between the community and the church. I describe it as having my back securely against the church’s walls (for support/resources/mentoring etc.) whilst I interact with those in the community.
I am a natural health practitioner on the Kapiti Coast and I’ve been running my own business since 2008; it’s a job that I absolutely love! I never cease to be amazed at the variety of folk that come seeking assistance, and the benefits they have gained are truly humbling. So many people have so many struggles and challenges on so many levels. I seek to meet people where they’re at regardless of who they are or where they’ve come from. Some say my clinic is like a beacon in the community (I guess that’s partly due to its bright green colour and being situated on the busiest road in the district!) but it is also a peaceful, welcoming and non-judgemental oasis in a busy world.
I am also the co-ordinator for our local fruit and vege co-op which operates out of St Paul’s Paraparaumu. This is an initiative that is run by the Wesley Community Action and Regional Public Health. We pack around 150 packs 50 weeks of the year. This is another great opportunity to come alongside people from all walks of life; and surplus produce is distributed to needy families.
I love how conversations I have with clients or co-op members are often ‘God led’ – responding to the nudge or asking the question that pops into my head so often leads to rewarding interactions with these people.
I’m excited to see where God will lead me in the coming years. If it’s anything like the journey I’ve already been on, then I can’t wait!
