Local Talent Shines at Anti Idol Show
On Sat 21st June, the crew down at St Mary’s Silverstream hosted Anti-Idol. We caught up with Youth Leader Karla Billington and Rev Kath Bier to hear how it went.
“It was an enormous success! We had a rich tapestry of talent that covered everything from a pretty slick Metallica cover band, to serious photographic art, absurd postmodern origami, seasonal poetry, and even a lesson in stilt-walking and balloon-animals!” Karla recalls.
“We had people from the parish, people from the neighbourhood and people from afar. At the end of the night we passed the microphone around the room and asked everyone to share their highlight from the evening. That was wonderful – so many rich comments.
Rev Kath adds, “We even had two grandparents who came to support their grandson’s thrash metal covers, who told us they had no idea what they were coming to (brave grandparents!) and were so blessed they said they felt the joy of God moving through the room.
“Jesus came to give us life to the fullest and we just want to share that with the neighbourhood.”
“The items were wonderful – some were really skilled, others hilarious and a couple were deeply moving. It was an evening of laughter and tears. Some of us might have come into the room as strangers to each other but no one left that way. We can’t wait to do this again. The next one will be in spring, so stay tuned!” says Karla.
If anyone across the Dio would like to run an Anti-Idol event in their parish, the team are happy to share any of the resources they put together and anything they learned along the way. You’re welcome to change and adapt as you need to suit your context.
