Give a box of Hope this Christmas

Rev. Chris Frazer
Deacon for Social Justice

In November 2002, the Hutt City Salvation Army conducted research into the experiences of those living on low incomes as Christmas approached. One young mother’s response to the question, “What do you like best about Christmas?” was immediate and heartbreaking: “When it’s all over.”

That phrase became the title of the report and sadly, 23 years later, it still rings true for many.

Today in Aotearoa, the cost of living continues to rise, and families are under immense financial pressure. One in seven children live in material hardship. Parents face impossible choices between paying bills and putting food on the table, let alone buying gifts or festive treats. The media’s portrayal of a joyful, abundant Christmas only deepens the sense of exclusion and distress for those who cannot afford it.

But as followers of Christ, we are called to respond, not with despair, but with hope and action.

Be Part of the Star Box Campaign

This Christmas, the Wellington City Mission invites churches, workplaces, and community groups across the region to host a Star Box. It’s a special collection box filled with love, essentials, and gifts for families doing it tough.

Parishes throughout Wellington are especially encouraged to take part. By hosting a Star Box in your church foyer, hall, or office, you’ll be helping stock the Mission’s Social Supermarket and Toy Store, where families can choose food and gifts with dignity and joy.

Why It Matters

Star Boxes are expressions of love and solidarity. They bring comfort and joy to families who might otherwise dread the holiday season. Your parish’s participation can help ensure that every child wakes up to a gift, and every family can share a festive meal.

Let us keep our eyes wide open this Advent. Let our choices reflect the love of Christ especially for those who feel forgotten. In the words of the carol, “Love came down at Christmas” and through your generosity, that love can shine brightly in our communities.
