Gingerbread House Photobooth Brings Christmas Cheer to Khandallah
Over 100 people gathered at St Barnabas Church for a festive afternoon of fun, food, and community connection.
Onslow Anglicans turned the grounds of St Barnabas Church into a Christmas celebration on Saturday, hosting their annual Gingerbread House Photobooth event. The family-friendly gathering drew more than a hundred guests from across Wellington’s northern suburbs for an afternoon of laughter, lawn games, and festive treats.
The event featured a beautifully decorated “Gingerbread House” cabin as its centrepiece, complete with oversized candy canes, snow-dusted props, and whimsical decorations. Families queued to step onto the porch, pose for photos, and create memories to take home.
“We love the playfulness the photobooth offers. It’s an invitation into joy, hope, and the simple delight of being together,” said Rev Andy Hickman, co-vicar at St Barnabas.
Andy added that the relaxed, picnic-style atmosphere reflected the heart of the church’s mission: “Jesus knew how to celebrate and enjoy the company of friends and visitors, and in a small way this party echoed that rhythm of simple joy.”
Guests enjoyed a sausage sizzle and steaming hot chocolates served by the church’s youth group, while children played lawn games and decorated footpaths with colourful chalk messages of Christmas cheer. Neighbours contributed trays of golden syrup gingerbread cookies, adding to the festive spirit.
“The generous involvement of our community reminded us how we grow connection and relationship with generously sharing kai and experiences together. It’s a beautiful thing,” said Andy.
Looking Ahead: Twilight Gallery and Chai Tea Garden
The Gingerbread House Photobooth is just one of several seasonal events hosted by Onslow Anglicans to bring people together.
Next on the calendar is ‘All is Calm ~ Twilight Gallery & Chai Tea Garden’, happening on Friday, 12 December, from 8–9pm at St Barnabas Church.
