COP26: Mission for Submissions
At our recent Synod, again as a Movement we committed to being a people who advocate for care for our climate. Here are some upcoming opportunities for us to learn, pray and take action as hopefully Jesus people.
COP26: Get down on your knees and pray
In the news at the moment there is much discussion around the COP26 climate conference in Glasgow, and over this period we are encouraging particular prayer for this critical summit.
In the COP26 opening ceremony, Alok Sharma, the COP26 president, warned that COP26 is 'last best hope to keep 1.5 degrees within reach'. We need rapid and ambitious action: based on the current intentions of the world’s governments, the world faces a disastrous 2.7C temperature increase.
Aotearoa's very own India Logan-Riley also shared an impassioned speech on the behalf of the Indigenous delegation. They retold watching our skies turn red during the bushfires in Australia in 2019/2020.
Elise Ranck, our climate advocate, has been helping to organise Karakia for Climate over this period. Each night, we all are welcome to gather online, at 8pm every day, to intercede for COP26 and God’s world. Covid restrictions permitting, we also have the opportunity to gather in person to pray in vigil at the end of COP26 along with other Christians across Aotearoa. This takes place at 630pm on 12 November at Anvil House, Wakefield St, Wellington.
Elise says: “Climate care can seem so impossible when we consider our own individual actions, and while it’s important we all play our part, as Jesus people we have hope in a God for whom all things are possible. That’s why it’s important that we continue to get down on our knees and intercede for our world and for those most affected by climate change.”
Climate Mission for Submissions: Take 2
Earlier this year, as a Movement we contributed hundreds of submissions to the Climate Commission, advocating for our government to create a strong Emissions Reduction Plan (ERP). Now, that has been announced, and we again have a chance to provide feedback.
The Emissions Reduction Plan makes a start in reducing Aotearoa’s carbon output, but there is more to be done to strengthen the ERP and set further targets to make a bolder and braver response. That’s why we are encouraging every member of our Movement to make a further submission to the government.
We know that our collective voice makes a difference. At www.anglicanmovement.nz/climate you will find everything you need to make a submission, or to mobilise your parish or mission unit to create submissions during or after one of your November Sunday services.
You will find in the resources some suggestions for wording your submission. The Advocacy team will also provide more analysis on the ERP in next week’s News for our Movement.
