Archivist’s Generosity a Gift to the Diocese
The Anglican Centre is once again benefiting from the time and expertise of archivist Denise Williams, who has just completed her third stint of volunteering with the Diocesan office.
A professional archivist and records manager with over 40 years’ experience, Denise first offered her services two years ago when she noticed a call for help in managing the Diocese’s growing archive collection. At the time, she was between jobs and welcomed the opportunity to stay intellectually active while contributing to the Church’s mission.
“Missing the intellectual stimulus and social interaction of work, I offered my services,” said Denise. “Volunteering for me is my way to give back and to continue doing the things I love.”
During her initial period of volunteering, Denise completed a full stocktake of the records, prepared a retention and disposal schedule, and marked up records that could be securely destroyed. “Many records, especially financial ones, only have to be kept for a number of years,” she explained. “So I helped remove a lot of surplus material from the archive room.”
After securing a full-time role, Denise stepped away from volunteering, but remained hopeful she could return after retirement. When a redundancy late last year brought her retirement forward, she reached out to volunteer once again.
Diocesan Manager Ben Pringle said the team is deeply grateful for Denise’s ongoing contributions. “We’re incredibly appreciative of Denise and the wealth of knowledge she brings,” he said. “She’s given so generously of her time and skills—this kind of support is truly invaluable.”
Now back in the archives, Denise is once again helping to preserve the Diocese’s institutional memory. “It also rather brings me full circle,” she reflected. “It was as a volunteer at the Canterbury Diocesan Archives in Kent that I realised I had found the job for me.”
“Denise’s work is helping to build a sustainable and accessible archive for future generations,” added Ben. “We’re lucky to have her—and even more lucky that she keeps coming back!”
Denise’s story is a reminder of the lasting value of volunteer service, and how professional experience, when shared generously, can have a real and lasting impact.
