Anglican Missions Launch Myanmar Earthquake Appeal
In the wake of the devastating 7.7-magnitude earthquake that struck Myanmar on March 28, 2025, Anglican Missions has launched the Myanmar Earthquake Appeal to support efforts in delivering food, shelter, and medical aid to those in need.
The earthquake, which originated in the Sagaing region, has resulted in over 2,000 confirmed deaths, a number expected to rise significantly as rescue operations continue.
The disaster has left approximately 6.3 million people in the hardest-hit areas grappling with the destruction of homes, infrastructure, and essential services. Airports in Mandalay and Nay Pyi Taw have been closed, complicating relief efforts, though Yangon Airport remains operational for incoming aid. In response, Myanmar authorities have formally requested international assistance, and rescue operations are underway.
With nine Anglican dioceses across the country, the church is deeply connected to local communities and well-positioned to assess and address the immediate needs of the affected populations.
Bishop Justin Duckworth, has called for compassionate generosity in response to the crisis:
"As followers of Christ, we are called to care for the least among us. In this moment of great suffering, we must give generously from our abundance to support those who have lost everything. Now is the time to stand together and extend love in action to the people of Myanmar."
The situation is dire, with reports indicating that entire communities have been displaced, lacking access to clean water, sanitation, and medical care. The UN has announced an initial $5 million aid package to provide urgent lifesaving assistance, but the scale of the disaster necessitates a broader, concerted effort from the global community.
Individuals and organizations are urged to contribute to the relief efforts. Donations to the Anglican Missions' appeal can be made via direct bank transfer to the Anglican Missions Board
