Lemonade Stand for East Africa
While much of the world’s attention is focussed on the war in Ukraine a much larger tragedy is quietly playing out in the Horn of Africa.
The current war in Ethiopia (thought to be the largest military conflict since WW2) is exacerbating the already precarious food shortage in the region. As crops fail in Ethiopia and climate change impacts the availability of water in the region large numbers of people subsequently face starvation.
Some of the kids at Kids’ Church in Greytown were quite struck by the severity of the current famine in East Africa. With 24 million people currently starving (increasing to an estimated 32 million by Christmas) and one person dying every 36 seconds between now and then (half of whom being children) our tamariki decided to do something about it.
Completely under their own steam they organised some mates and setup a lemon stand to raise money for the famine relief effort, raising a total of $476.10. They also wrote to their school principal who agreed that they can hold a mufti-day later in the term to raise even more funds.
