28 Prompts to Connect with God

During June folk from Re-New Communities have been experiencing God through a 28-Day Journey.

With the 28 challenges laid out on a single A5 card some people have thought of it like bingo - seeing what opportunities come up each day. Others have been following the daily prompts, leaning into each day’s challenge.

The theme of experiencing the Holy Spirit powerfully but simply each day is something that the leadership of Re-New felt was an important journey in 2023.

When thinking about how to resource people for this journey, the realisation was that when it comes to experiencing God, more content about experience isn't helpful, and that some things are learnt simply by doing them.

Other than the card itself, another resource to help people along in the journey is a summary that has been written about each prompt to help people get started if they are stuck on one. Groups have been reflecting on the prompts in services and small groups, and the conversations have been a chance to encourage others on the journey.

People have realised that there are some prompts that are a more natural or easy fit for them, but what different people find challenging varies greatly. One person felt putting on a song and dancing with God would be out of their comfort zone while another person said, “that will be the easiest one for me!”. This has led to some great realisations about practices that people could take up more regularly as an ongoing practice of prayer.

The physicality of some of the challenges - dancing, kneeling, walking, writing - surprised many in how much of a difference changing their body posture made to their prayer.

One person shared how they were so moved by kneeling in prayer, saying it seemed to engage them in a different way. They were able to focus more intently on being with God and found themself tearing up.
