Young people present winning pies

It was a pie extravaganza in Khandallah on Sunday when Onslow Anglicans hosted its 2nd annual Pie Competition. An eclectic range of 17 pies were submitted and made available for the 40 guests who attended. Guest judge Sam Walker, who also runs 'Sams Art House', tasted samples of every pie and picked the tastiest three without being informed about what ingredients were used or who made them.

Eileen Barrett-Whitehead, one of several experienced cooks, said how wonderful it was that the winning pies were all created by young people - 'peach & raspberry' (Ena, 13), 'chorizo & chicken' (Lizzy, 16), and 'spiced apple' (Rosa, 11).

A crowd favorite was a spicy raisin tart pie labeled 'Fly Cemetery'. "I was so happy when everybody cheered for Fly Cemetery because that's what I made!" said a delighted Edward (aged 8).

Earlier, co-vicars Bek and Andy Hickman spoke about how Jesus is introduced in John's gospel as "God moved into the neighborhood" (relaying a theme from Bishop Ana's recent synod message).

For some folks it was their first time visiting Onslow's St Barnabas building.

"We love the people in our neighborhood," says Karen Moreau, Onslow Anglicans Community Connector. "We are here to share God's joy. This event is about friends meeting new friends and celebrating life together."

Winners each received a certificate and voucher to the local 'Bread & Butter Eatery'.
