Low Carbon Challenge Launches
Saturday marked the official launch of the Low Carbon Challenge. This year eight hundred Anglicans had their say on advice from the Climate Change Commission. Now hundreds of us are changing our lifestyles to care for the climate.
We learned about what makes up our carbon footprint and were challenged to find ways to reduce it. It turns out, that despite our ‘clean green’ image, Kiwis are big polluters and our carbon footprints are four times that of our pacific neighbours. It may seem that changing our personal lifestyle is just a drop in the ocean, but our choices can motivate others to do the same, and collectively we can make an impact.
Here are some of the goals that teams set on Saturday:
Eat food that is in season and grown locally
Pick up five pieces of rubbish a day and don’t buy new toys (Audrey, aged 4)
Only eat red meat two days a week
Potato growing competition with next door neighbours
Travel by bike or walk for trips 10km or less
Reduce plastic when purchasing food, use refilleries
We also made commitments to pray for the climate during the challenge. For some, this is praying whilst driving or doing the gardening. Lyall Bay Community Church have chosen to wear bands to remind themselves to pray for the climate.
If you missed the session, you can still take part. Head along to Training Day in Palmerston North this Saturday (7th) or check out the video that will be on our website soon. Remember to register your team to get access to support and other events.
