Cursillo Retreat Provides Rich Retreat Experience

This past weekend, 46 participants came together for a unique experience of Christian community El Rancho, Waikanae.

The retreat was part of the Cursillo Christian movement and for the first time, men’s and women's programmes were held simultaneously, with 24 men and 22 women participating. The full group came together for shared meals and a closing worship service.

Rev Hennie Nothnagel, one of the event organizers, described the gathering as "a beautiful weekend of worship and fellowship as Christ followers."

He added, "We were together with a great bunch of men ranging from 18 years to late 70s, consisting of team members and pilgrims on the journey."

The men's programme focused on building connections and sharing experiences.

Rev Pete Hull commented about the men’s retreat, saying, "Many connected with each other on a new level and tapped into each other's wisdom. We experienced the joy of sharing our journey with one another, both highs and lows of life."

The women’s retreat reported significant personal and spiritual growth.

Rev Tracey Peters stated, "It was wonderful to have an opportunity to prioritize ourselves and our time with God. Our cups were filled to overflowing with fellowship, faith sharing and doing life together."

The retreat featured a variety of activities, including worship sessions, prayer meetings, and talks from guest speakers. Attendees also enjoyed high-quality amenities, including gourmet meals and professional barista services.

Both groups highlighted the formation of new friendships and the strengthening of existing bonds within the community. As one participant noted, "There was a real bonding in groups and new friendships formed."

The success of this combined retreat format suggests it may become a model for future Cursillo events in the Wellington Diocese and potentially other Christian communities across New Zealand.
